RUSSIAN ROARING TWENTIES

David Aaron Carpenter | Viola

Russian Center for Science and Culture,

"Russian Roaring Twenties" или “Жестокий романс“

An extraordinary concert will be held at the Russian Centre of Science and Culture, on occasion of the Malta International Music Festival, on the 25th of April.

The Maltese composer Alexey Shor wrote a whole cycle of musical pieces, potpourri and metamorphoses inspired by “thieves’ songs” of the Soviet era, such as the criminal romance "Murka", an urban folklore hit of the 1920s from Odessa. Other songs like "Bagels" or "Fried chicken" illustrate a time of radical changes and social drama, underlined by the dark, colourful and velvety sound of the viola that Alexey Shor chose as the leading instrument. The famous American violist David Aaron Carpenter will perform this programme, accompanied by his ensemble. Nobody should miss!

Anyhow, the original concert demands the original setting: you are offered hot bagels, tea made in samovar, pancakes, red caviar and other traditional Russian specialties. You will learn a lot of unknown facts about the motives known by many Russians since their childhood and plunge into one of the wildest eras of the USSR.

The concert is organised by the European Foundation for the Support of Culture with the assistance of Russian Centre for Science and Culture on 25th of April at 7:30 pm.

Location: Russian Centre for Science and Culture, 36, Merchants Street, Valletta.
