Joseph Vella

Joseph Vella was born in 1942, and passed away suddenly on 25th february 2018. Vella studied at the London college of music, the University of Durham and with Franco donadoni. Together with Verena Maschat he set up the Johann Strauss school of music in Valletta. He was appointed associate professor of music at the university of malta.

Vella had a considerable diversity of styles, ranging from neo-classical to romantic and modern influences. Though his music was basically atonal, his compositions were accessible and effective, weaving abstract musical lines and exploring the  inherent musicality of the maltese language.

As a conductor, Vella had a wide repertoire and collaborated with many orchestras. His association with the Malta Choral Society was long and fruitful. He was the musical director of the Astra Opera theatre in Gozo, and was appointed the first resident conductor of the National Orchestra of Malta.
