Malta Philharmonic Orchestra
The Malta Philharmonic Orchestra was founded as the Manoel Theatre Orchestra in 1968, and became an independent orchestra in 1997. It was expanded into a full-size symphony orchestra in 2008.
The orchestra’s first conductor was Joseph Sammut, and since then, it has also been under the direction of Joseph Vella, Michael Laus and Brian Schembri.
As Malta’s only professional orchestra, the MPO is in high demand, but its busy schedule notwithstanding, it has increasingly ventured beyond Malta’s shores in recent years.
The MPO is a keen exponent of Maltese composers, and is also responsible for the orchestral training and professional development of the next generation of Maltese musicians, through the MPO Academy and the Malta Youth Orchestra.
While it celebrates 50 years of music, the MPO remains intent on delivering quality orchestral music to the Maltese islands and promote Malta’s musical heritage overseas.
